Mid Century Michael Hirst Leather Safari Chair. Circa 1960.

Two identical chairs available, both in fabulous original condition (see last image). Original leather upholstery in superb condition (no holes, stains, scratches or damage). Michael Hirst (1917 – 2002) was an accomplished designer and manufacturer of Mid Century Modern Furniture pieces between 1955 and 1982. Based on Indian Roorkhee Chairs used by the British military, the Safari Chair is an early example of self-assembled furniture. It features a no-glue frame, tool-free assembly, and an intelligent construction that causes the joints to tighten when the chair is sat on, enhancing its strength and stability. It features a solid rosewood frame, leather seat and saddle leather armrests.
