A9100 – Restored Early Victorian Light-Tone Mahogany Chest, c. 1860

Note: The lighter area in the centre of the chest shown in the first image is a reflection of the camera stand.

Comprehensively restored and fitted with new hardwood drawer runners, this rare early Victorian chest is a distinctive example of nineteenth-century craftsmanship. Its elegant proportions, exceptional construction and beautifully preserved character make it both a striking and practical piece.

Features:

  • Solid light-tone Mahogany construction

  • Traditional French-polish finish

  • Five rebuilt, hand-dovetailed drawers with smooth, reliable operation

  • Clean drawer interiors

  • Original decoratively turned Mahogany handles with original Mahogany screws

  • Original oversized brass keyholes and internal locks

  • Original drawer shelving to help minimise dust between drawers

  • New hardwood drawer runners

  • Original Mahogany drawer stops, refitted

  • Exceptionally high build quality

  • Original Mahogany bun feet with new commercial-grade anti-scratch pads

  • Distinctive distressed features and original patina retained

  • Large profile with deep drawers

  • Full-length side pillars

  • Thick Mahogany drawer bases

Restoration and condition: The five extra-large drawers have been completely rebuilt, re-glued and re-nailed. New timber cross-members have been installed beneath the drawers to provide additional strength and load-bearing capacity, while the original bases have been refitted. The drawers feature more than twice the usual number of dovetails and now open and close smoothly.

The internal rails and guides show minimal wear and have been re-glued and re-nailed where required. The external Mahogany surfaces retain beautiful distressed details and natural patina. A crack to the right side has been rejoined with high-strength compound, filled, colour-matched and French-polished. The original back-boards remain in good order and have been re-nailed with deep-biting 50 mm nails.

Please note: This is an exceptionally heavy chest for its size, even with the drawers removed, and will require at least two people for removal and transport.
